Ferriby 10, Sun 25 Jan

Peter Shields reports ... 3 Ilkley Harriers went over to the East Riding on Sunday to run in the long established Ferriby Ten. This race has been running since the 1960's and during its course was classed as a premier event on the road race calendar with such luminaries as Brendan Foster taking part, he still holds the record standing at 47mins 13secs, something I fear will not be beaten. Steve Weston led the Ilkley runners home with a strong 1hr-05mins-13secs in 69th place, this following his equally strong running at the previous weeks Brass Monkey, now injury free Steve is looking forward to a full race programme and further improvement. Nick Pearce has suffered a recurring knee injury since he fell at the 3 Shires Fell Race, this has left him with little quality training, However his time of 1hr-10mins-08secs in 135th place shows the potential he has when fully fit. Peter Shields running a road race for the first time in well over, what has been a difficult year, completed the trio of results finishing in a time of 1hr-24mins-07secs in 414th place. Peter gained a lot of confidence from competing in this race, one he has run in many times going back into the 1970's. Results ...

Northern XC Championship Pontefract, Sat 24 Jan

Petra Bijsterveld reports ... As a direct result of the encouragement of our XC captains Julie and Steve I entered the Yorkshire as well as the Northern Championships for the first time this year and I can recommend these races to all, fast and uhh, maybe not so fast. Anyone who thinks these races are for the elite only please do think again, whilst there are many fast runners all abilities are represented and welcomed! There were only four Harrier ladies today and Sally Malir had an excellent race finishing in the first 100 in a very strong field. There was a stiff wind and plenty of quality mud to make it a tough course, and I never felt I got into my stride. I was pleased to find there were still another 50 women behind me when I got to the end, as I had started to feel I could well be the last one! Tom Adams was the first of the seven Harrier men to cross the line in 40th place, and there were excellent results for the other men, making the Ilkley men's team 19th out of 58.
An added bonus was seeing Alistair Brownlee run who finished in second place.

Brass Monkey, Sun 18 Jan

From Dan Wilkinson ... Clear blue still skies greeted us as we arrived at York Race course for this popular opener to the season, so it looked like it would be a day for fast times. Unfortunately there were sections of the course that were extremely icy, but the general consensus was that this only took about 20-30 seconds of times. Harriers put out some great times notably Jane McCarthy with a PB and winning the V40 category. Ben Sheppard surprised himself completing the course 5 minutes faster than he expected and Will Worboys and I took a big slug off our previous PBs at 7 and 5 minutes respectively.

English U20 Indoor Combined Events Championships (Heptathlon), EIS, Sheffield, 10/11 Jan

Shirley reports ... Not only were the best in the country competing but an England place was at stake for the first 3 finishers and the event incorporated the Northern Indoor Championships (22 U20's were competing). Ilkley's Harry Maslen has been getting stronger throughout the season and has had good winter training under the guidance of Sam Stanislaus who now coaches him in Gateshead. On Saturday he competed in the 60m (3rd fastest in 7.31 (PB)), long Jump (2nd in 6m 63 (PB)), shot (12th best in 11m 01) and pole vault (8th best in 3m.81 (PB)). This put him in 4th place with just 1 point adrift of 3rd. On the Sunday he competed in 60mHurdles (3rd in 8.58 (PB)), high jump (3rd in 1m 89) and the 1000m (3rd in 2.48.28 (PB)). It was a remarkable two days of competition. Harry finished in 4th place with 4943 points. His points total was incredibly high for someone not to make it on to the podium however it was a great achievemnet and one that he can be massively proud of. His friend and training partner from Gateshead (Anthony Hogg) won the competition breaking the 5000 point barrier and I am sure that over the coming year they'll push each other in training and competition. Harry gained a silver medal as runner up to Anthony in the Northern Championships and has been selected as a non travelling reserve for the GB and NI team in the U23 20 International indoor match combined events in Nogent-sur-oise, France on the 24/25 January.

Giants Tooth fell race, Thu 1 Jan 2015

Jann Smith reports ... 3m / 400ft. I had a go at this well attended race which was a bit short and fast for New Years Day, it went up and down scenic woods to a trig point around Ogden reservoir, which was a bit more sheltered from the gales. 3rd lady / 1st Female Vet.

Nine Standards fell race, Thu 1 Jan 2015

Dan Wilkinson reports ... With the mountain weather predicting 100mph gusts what better way to see in the new year than to run as quick as possible to and from the summit of Nine Standards Rigg!? The wind impeded progress significantly as did various bog crossings and streams in spate. I got the clothing choice wrong and had to stop to put a jacket on choosing to start running in only a vest. It didn't slow proceedings too much and I finished 4th, Alison Weston was 9th lady.
